Surf Dog Teams
Watch a tutorial about surf dog training from Helen Woodward Animal Center.
Head on over to Doggstuff to get your furry friend fitted for a PFD.
-
Your team will consist of two humans to accompany your surf dog.
Solo: One human will select the wave and push your dog into it.
Tandem: One human will ride with your dog on the board.
The 2nd human will ensure safety at the shoreline.
-
Along with a dog who is happy to be in the water, you’ll need a doggie flotation device (PFD), which is required to participate in the competition. Doggstuff on Birdneck Road carries them. (Ask for Jeff if you need help selecting the right style.)
Bring your dog to the beach on a leash, but you won’t use it in the water. Likewise, no board leashes will be used.
Use a soft top board or a board with grips appropriate for the size of your dog. Soft top is preferred.
-
Dogs will be assigned to a heat based on weight with 4 surf teams per heat. Dogs in each heat have 10-15 minutes to catch as many waves as they can.
We will post the heat schedule online a few days before. Check in starts at 7:45 am, with the first heat beginning at 8 am.
Judging will be based on wave size, ride length, and confidence on the board. The winners from each heat will compete in one final championship round.
-
Spend some time training your surf dog before the competition. Choose a calm day and always make sure your dog is comfortable and safe.
Consider enrolling you and your dog in lessons with local expert surf instructors at VB Surf Sessions.
